How to play

All 52 cards sit face-up in eight columns (four of seven cards, four of six). Move the bottom card of a column onto another whose bottom is one rank higher and the opposite color. Park any available card in an empty free cell. Send Aces and following suit ranks to the four foundations.

Quick reference

  • Goal: fill four foundations Ace to King by suit.
  • Tableau: build down, alternating colors.
  • Free cells: one card each; empty columns accept any card.
  • Supermoves: you may move a valid run if free cells and empty columns would have let you do it one card at a time.

Objective

Get every card onto the foundations. Stuck with cards left in the tableau or free cells is a loss for that deal.

Setup and deal

  1. Shuffle a 52-card deck.
  2. Deal face-up into 8 columns: 7, 7, 7, 7, 6, 6, 6, 6.
  3. Leave four empty free cells and four empty foundation slots.

Gameplay

  1. Only the bottom card of each column and cards in free cells are available.
  2. Build tableau down in alternating colors.
  3. Move an available Ace (then 2, 3, … King of that suit) to a foundation.
  4. Fill empty columns with any single card, or a supermove run that fits.
  5. In this browser version, tap to select, then tap a destination. Double-tap sends a card to a foundation when legal.

Winning

Win when each foundation holds thirteen cards of one suit. Track wins and deals in this browser.

Common variations

  • Baker's Game: tableau builds by suit instead of alternating color.
  • Eight Off: eight free cells, but only Kings fill empty columns.
  • Fewer free cells for a harder puzzle; more for an easier one.

Tips and strategy

  • Keep free cells empty when you can. Each filled cell shrinks supermoves.
  • Empty columns multiply how far a run can travel. Guard them.
  • Expose Aces early, but do not rush mid ranks onto foundations if you still need them as anchors.

Glossary

Free cell
A one-card parking spot above the tableau.
Supermove
Moving a descending alternating run as one action when free cells and empty columns allow it.
Foundation
Suit pile built Ace to King; filling all four wins.

Brief history

Paul Alfille created FreeCell for the PLATO system in 1978. Microsoft shipped it with Windows in the mid-1990s and turned it into a desk-job legend. Of the original 32,000 Microsoft deals, only one is known to be unsolvable.
